Hair jigs and smallmouth bass go together like ham and eggs. A bait doesn't develop a reputation like that unless it works. Try these tactics for more brown bass this winter.
Once upon a time, long ago, anglers believed that their prey did not bite during cold water seasons. When early winter arrived, they put their rods and reels in the garage and waited for warm spring breezes. Modern-day angles know better.

Dale Hollow, which produced the world-record smallmouth bass, still ranks among the nation's finest destinations for heavyweight smallies.
Rocky hollows bound ultra-clear waters, where heavyweight smallmouth bass lurk. Among the big bronze-sided fish, many Southern smallmouth anglers contend, are fish that would shatter the current world record of 11 pounds, 15 ounces.

If you've watched Fox's hit show 24, you already know that stands for What Would Billy Westmorland Do. You've gotta wonder, even just a little bit, what one of the greatest Smallmouth fishermen, if not the greatest, would do if he was grinding it out like the rest of us in pursuit of legendary status that could be just a few feet and a good hookset away.
We're still left with the question, what would he do to increase his odds of eclipsing David Hayes' pig with gills if we were lucky enough to ask him? Well, fortunately for us, Jack Huddleston of Horse Creek Resort (www.HorseCreek-Resort.com) made sure of it that we wouldn't have to wonder. From what I gather, Jack made him sit down and write his top 10 ways to do it and we're going to share them with you.

A
s twilight steals the glimmer from the clear, green water, Stephen Headrick finally takes pity upon me.
"I think you had some bites last night but just didn't know it," he says. "Tonight, pop that jig off the bottom; reel a little, and then watch your line as it falls."
"You'll see the bite."
