Dale Hollow Lake Fishing Report 6-9-09
Tue, 09 Jun 2009 8:06 AM
David Hayes and his World Record Smallmouth BassWhoa...a new report!  I know, we deserve it - with the Summer Season in full swing we've been slammed, but that's a good problem to have.  We're working on some cool things for the site that's taking up a lot of our time.  Throw in some fishing, day jobs, & family and it's no wonder they say there isn't enough time in the day.  Anyway, on to the report...

All of the reports coming in have been awesome - guys are limiting out on Walleye, killing the Largemouths, and consistently boating quality Bronzebacks.  The hot method to use right now is anchoring up with submersible green lights.  The Guru explains this method further down in our report and how you'll catch a smorgasbord of fish.

As you'll see in the picture to the right, we met up with D.L. Hayes, Smallmouth Bass World Record holder, and talked to him about the historical catch, heard some great stories about other fishing trips, and even learned about his piloting days.  For some, catching such an enormous fish (pictures DO NOT do this fish justice) would be an experience of a lifetime, but imagine flying your own plane over this wonder of a lake, and the spot where you caught that fish - that must have been the icing on the cake for sure.

Quote of the Week:
"The two best times to fish is when it's rainin' and when it ain't."
-Patrick F. MacManus

What's Working

This week we're going to do something a little different - instead of going through the usual suspects, we want to share a technique with you that will help you catch not only Smallmouth, but many other species too.  Besides the obvious, here's what you'll need:  a green light (the Guru prefers the 4' Hydro Glow), a #4 treble hook, a 1/8th oz. split shot, a few 1 oz. sinkers, and an anchor.

"The first thing I do is find a place close to the channel were it breaks away into shallow water. I go to the edge of the break on the shallow side and tie a rope around a bush so the back of the boat is sitting in around 15 feet of water. Then I anckor the front end in about 40 feet, but this time of year I only want the front of the boat sitting in around 20 feet (as the season gets hotter I just keep going out into deeper water). Next, I attached some 1oz. weights to my green light and lower it down - I perfer the 4' model from Hydro Glow. I like to use a 7' rod with 8 lb fluorescent line and a #4 treble hook on the end. I put 1/8 ounce weight about 12" to 18" above the treble hook. Once the light has been in the water for about 15 minutes there will be bait fish in about 10 to 15 feet of water, and after about 30 minutes or so you'll see them start to form a ball around the light. Lower your hook down to 15 feet of water and jerk up until you snag a shad, turn right around and cast it into the edge of the light. As your bait sinks to the bottom leave your bail open - once the bait reaches bottom, the next time your line peels of the reel it will be a fish.  Blacklights will help you see your line better, and I may be biased, but I like my CastGLO L.E.D. blacklight!  The other night I took a friend out and we limited out on Walleye, caught 3 Drum, a Catfish, 5 Smallmouth of good size, and my first Lake Trout in this lake!  By the way, it's as much fun snagging the shad as it is catching the fish except they don't tasted as good!  Have fun, and good fishing."

If any of you are having success with another type of bait or technique, please let us know in a comment below and help our readers for their upcoming trips!

Hot Spots
Like always, we give you a little headstart in our reports to two spots that should produce. FYI: Geo-Coordinates are used in Geocoding - the process of using digital values to tag locations, common in online services or media. GPS Cooridanates are your standard values used on maps.

Roberts Hollow - fish the primary and secondary points on the left.

Trout
The daytime trout fishing is excellent, but it isn't easy trolling due to all of the debris that we've had. Troll shad raps or spoons on down riggers 15 to 40 ft deep on the lower end of the lake. They are on the move so try the main channel or the creeks until you find them. The nighttime bite at the dam was off due to the spill way gates being open but is back on now. Try fishing night crawlers or shad under lights along bluffs or cuts too. Courtesy of Dave Clark, multi-species guide on Dale Hollow.

Largemouth
The Largemouth Bass fishing has picked up with the full moon.  Most of the fish are being caught in 10 to 15 feet of water around thick grass.  There has been reports of them being caught in less then 5 feet of water up the lake in colored water. Green Pumpkin Brush Hog and 8" seeker worms in red and black, grape in the creeks or out on grassy flats.

With all the fishing starting to pick up there will be more of you showing up to tackle the Holler. Make your life a little easier and stop by the Dale Hollow 1 Stop so that the Guru can mark some spots on your map and pick up some last minute supplies while you're there. More people means more boat traffic too, so please be courtious to others on the water and have a safe & awesome trip to Dale Hollow Lake.

Our goal at DaleHollowFishing.com is to keep you updated on fishing Dale Hollow Lake, not just on the famous Smallmouth Bass, but the rest of the species as well. We are assembling a team of area experts and will post reports for all species found in Dale Hollow Lake very soon. If you are interested in writing for us, please contact us...
