Dale Hollow Lake Fishing Report 11-2-09
Tue, 09 Jun 2009 8:06 AM
Our November report marks an exciting step for us at DHF.  It's been exhausting for everyone but we are back in full swing with our new report format.  If you aren't familiar, here's a quick run down - we will be releasing one big report at the beginning of each month that talks about what to expect for the upcoming month, what type of bait and what colors are hot for that time of the year, what type of structure to look for under certain conditions, and of course our hotspots (more about hotspots below).

Just one report you ask?  Yes, and for two good reasons.  1. Fish change patterns quickly, weather can turn at any given moment, etc... etc...  so instead of telling you what the fish were doing the week before, we're going to help you learn what to expect and what has worked based on historical data from a number of different sources and put together smarter patterns.  2. Who better to update information on what the fish are currently doing than the guys who fish for a living...the guides.  We've finished setting up the guide report section and are currently training a few guides on how to add a report when they get home from a trip.  This will keep information fresh, almost real time, and provide you with invaluable source of info before you hit the lake.

Also 2 quick things - don't forget that the Guru's tournament is this weekend, November 7th & 8th.  Click here for more information and for the registration forms.  The other thing I'd like to mention is that October 27th marked our first full year of having this site live and we are blown away by the numbers that we've seen while studying our analytic reports.  They by far exceeded our expectations for the first year and we owe a big thanks to you for making that happen.  Like always we are working on ways to improve the site by trimming some fat and adding some new features to test out and we have a couple cool things planned for the next few weeks.  We'll update everyone when they're ready...for now, on to the report!

Quote of the Week:
"There he stands, draped in more equipment than a telephone lineman, trying to outwit an organism with a brain no bigger than a breadcrumb, and getting licked in the process."
-Paul O'Neil

Smallmouth

What to Expect

Smallmouth fishing in November on Dale Hollow Lake can get really good and as we get toward the end of the month it's always good!  If you remember last November you'll remember that the water level was very low.  Smallmouth had to move out more toward the main body to get deeper but this year fish are being caught in the creeks because the water level is a lot higher and you can expect more of that.  Bait fish like to feed up on the plankton that gets washed into the creeks from the fall rains, and when the bait fish get feeding, so do the smallies.  Always keep a good eye on the weather before planning your trip so you know what to expect.  As the water temp drops the warmer rain will also get the baitfish going.  Rainy days in November are a great time to land a pig.

The thing about smallmouth fishing this time of year is that they are anywhere from 5 to 40 feet deep, but as the end of the month nears they'll get shallower.  They'll move shallower in stained water also so keep that in mind when planning out your spots.  The colors you throw need to be lighter because the food source gets lighter - ie crawfish shells.  Smallmouth are trying to feed up for the winter and if the wind gets up go to crankbaits...if there isn't any wind I like a Carolina Rig with a green pumpkin tube.  Drop shot fishing around grass is another great technique this time of year, and remember that float and fly fishing is just around the corner!  Last year when the water hit 57 degrees we had 13 fish with a couple over 21".

If any of you are having success with another type of bait or technique, please let us know in a comment at the bottom of the report and help our readers for their upcoming trips!

HotSpots
Like always, we give you a little headstart in our reports to two spots that should produce. FYI: Geo-Coordinates are used in Geocoding - the process of using digital values to tag locations, common in online services or media. GPS Cooridanates are your standard values used on maps.

NEW! We are almost finished with a new and exciting addition called DHF HotSpots.  It's a separate section of DaleHollowFishing.com and features the Smallmouth Guru's favorite spots to fish on Dale Hollow Lake!  Not only is there an interactive map showing Stephen's HotSpot locations that he's fished for decades on this lake, but each location has it's own page with a detailed description of the spot, pictures, and video of the Guru teaching how to fish that spot WHILE HE'S FISHING IT!  If you can't tell I'm really excited about this...this is very cool and goes way beyond a map with a marker. There is one catch - this will be our first VIP Member feature, and yes it's a paid membership.  We haven't established the pricing just yet but it won't be very much and you'll get more than just access to the HotSpots.  More info to come as we get closer...

Fannys Creek - fish the primary and secondary points on the left.

Trout
We will update this report with trout info in the next day or two...

Crappie
Crappie fishing is good around the grass through November in 10 to 15 feet of water with tuffy minnows and a slip bobber.  The key is to get over brush piles in about 30-35 feet of water.  Put your bobber stop 15-20' up your line (depending on the depth) so that you're in the top of the brush.  Remember that Crappie feed up so if you aren't catching fish adjust your bobber stop.  1' could mean the difference between a good meal or a good fishing story ;)

Largemouth
Largemouth are on top water in November around grass and start to slow down as we get toward the end of the month and the water cools.  Worms, Senkos, drop shotting, and the usual suspects will entice a good slickhead this time of the year.

With all the fishing starting to pick up there will be more of you showing up to tackle the Holler. Make your life a little easier and stop by the Dale Hollow 1 Stop so that the Guru can mark some spots on your map and pick up some last minute supplies while you're there. More people means more boat traffic too, so please be courtious to others on the water and have a safe & awesome trip to Dale Hollow Lake.
